Conservation & restoration
Book restoration and repair
Since 1988 our Conservation Department has serviced the needs of the archive and book collecting community with a range of conservation and restoration services.
Our work includes the repair and conservation of paper, restoration of cloth and leather books, rebacks and full rebinds in a wide variety of period styles.
Paper conservation
Washing, de-acidifying and repairing paper
Stained and acidic paper can be washed and de-acidified. Simple repairs can be made in situ, but books that require extensive cleaning and repair can be disbound by our qualified team of conservators prior to treatment.
Leather and cloth restoration
Repairing and rebacking cloth and leather books
We specialise in the repair and rebacking of cloth and leather books. We always try to preserve the original bindings, but when it is necessary we can make facsimile spines to match the original covers.
Archival storage systems
Safe housing for paper artefacts
The preservation of delicate archival material is of paramount importance. Paper requires stable and controlled conditions for safe long-term storage. We have a number of solutions for the safe housing and storing of paper artefacts. The priority is to keep vulnerable materials in an acid-free environment such as an archival box or polyester sleeves.
