A short tutorial on the first principles of bookbinding

The Art of the Book

This 16 page instruction manual is supplied as a flat sheet, rolled for postage. By following the straightforward instructions you will learn how to turn this sheet of paper into an instruction manual with a hard cover. In other words, you will bind your own textbook!

Starting with a flat sheet is the best way to learn the important principles of grain direction and imposition. The manual explains how to make a hard cover using bookcloth and decorative paper and gives you a practical guide to the materials and tools needed to make simple case bound books. There is also a glossary of common bookbinding terms.

By following this exercise you will have learnt the underlying principles of how all good books are bound, and be able to go on to explore the endless potential of this fascinating craft.
